Commission for a mural on this wall next to a sliding door. I decided to make the door part of it, and used whiteboard for the bubbles so anyone can write their own dialogue.

It's been a long time since I updated this blog.

Why? Well my laptop got stolen by my housemate's friends, and I spent months moving around looking for somewhere else to live.

I lost the projects I was working on at the time, including a pretty big Processing/Arduino project which I had been hoping to show somewhere. I'm not keen on repeating myself, so if I do those projects again I'll have to make them different

What work have I been doing lately instead? Well, I've made a mural, an experimental Arduino device, taken some photos for a magazine, designed a project for 3d printing, and helped with an album cover.

I'll post details of some of these things soon.

It is done, and it proved surprisingly difficult, probably because I still have a lot to learn about Illustrator. No title yet.

I used water-based fabric paint for this. The brushes I had weren't too precise so I relied on masking tape to get all the lines. I masked off all the rubber areas first. Then I masked off a triangle on each shoe and roughly brushed in where I wanted the yellow to be, watering it down a bit to soften the edges. I felt I couldn't be sure of lining up purple and yellow areas with no gap or overlap, and a full undercoat of yellow would have affected the purple, so I just made the yellow areas a bit bigger and rougher.

All edges had to be masked. I dry brushed the smaller triangle in the middle there just to act as a guideline for placing the tape later. My isometric grid system meant I'd be putting down tape just to get the placement right of the adjacent bit of tape, then taking the first bit off again before I started painting.

Once I started taking tape off I noticed some retouching was needed in a few places. You'll notice the paint dries lighter.

Once they were done they just needed fixed with an iron, then they were ready to wear.

I'm on the lookout for some suitable coloured laces.

Custom Plimsolls Part 1

I got some new plimsolls, but I decided to make them a bit different. Here's the before shot.
I messed around with mock ups in Photoshop.

I decided on something triangular. I found that with a 60 degree angle I could make a isometric grid with masking tape, and use that to make triangular patterns with fabric paint.

I was gravitating towards something based on this: The Sierpiński Triangle.
